The first Quaid-e-Azam Amateur Golf Championship came to a sharp competitive conclusion at the Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course on Sunday. Over the days of the championship, a total of 92 accomplished and skill loaded amateurs have endeavoured to carve up victory and honours but the ultimate winner turned out to be Sardar Murad of the host club in gross section and Raza Said in the net section. Incidentally Raza Said is also from Gymkhana..
Undoubtedly Sardar Murad grabbed the prestigious top slot in gross through steady play and a stable control over his temperament.
In the two rounds he had scores of gross 77 in the first round and gross 76 in the final round and this effort gave him a winning aggregate of 153 over 36 holes.
The intensity of competition can be gauged from the fact that his nearest challenger Robin Bagh of Mianwali Golf Club also ended up at a score of gross 153 and Sardar Murad edged past him because of a better score in the final round.
Others who secured positions in the gross section are Mohsen Zafar, followed by Salman Jehangir (Gymkhna), M.Rehman (Royal Palm) and Qasim Ali Khan (Gymkhana).
Position wise Mohsen Zafar came third with a two rounds score of 154. In the race for net honours Raza Said of Gymkhana and a golfer who is talented and reflects superb fitness played energetically in the final round to crush all front leaders of the first round.
The top one in the professionals event was Shahid Javed Khan with scores of gross 71 in the first 18 holes and again a 71 in the final round.
At the conclusion of the championship the prizes were awarded to the performers by M. Rafiq Rajwana, Governor Punjab in a grand prize distribution attended by Mian Misbah ur Rehman, Agha Ali Imam, Shafqat Rana, Sarmad Nadeem, Najam Hafeez(CNS Engineering), Muneeb Khawaja (Schneider Electric), participating golfers and families.
