Use of messenger service WhatsApp depends on providing the company with your mobile telephone number. The app won't automatically register an altered phone number, so making the switch requires some initiative.
People typically change numbers when they lose their work-supplied phone after resigning from a job, or when they move to a new country. It's not hard to switch a WhatsApp registration if you do it right, according to German telecommunications portal Teltarif.de in a recent advisory. First, go to Settings, then pick Account and then Change number. From then on, it's just a question of entering the old and new phone numbers.
Once that's complete, WhatsApp sends a verification text message to the new phone. If installed on an Android or Blackberry smartphone, the app itself reviews the message automatically and updates to the new number.
Windows Phone and iPhone users have to do a little more work, clicking on the text message to make the changes take effect.
WhatsApp will also allow accounts to be linked to a landline number, which is useful for people who like to have calls forwarded to their mobile phones from a landline number. Most traditional phones cannot received text messages, but WhatsApp is ready for that.
It will try to send you a verification code by text message for five minutes. If its system encounters failure, it will try an automated phone call instead. Answer the call and you will hear the verification code read aloud to you. Take a note and use this to update the registration.
