The Board of Directors' (BoD) meeting of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL), which was scheduled on December 21, 2015, has not been convened, following the protest of airline's employees. The PIACL employees had started protesting since the issuance of Presidential Ordinance No XVII to convert Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) from a statutory corporation to a company governed under the Companies Ordinance, 1984 as they are considering it as a way forward towards privatisation.
The protesters, who raised placards and banners and chanted slogans against the PIACL privatisation and Presidential Ordinance, have blocked the main entrance of PIACL head office for hours that led the annulment of BoD scheduled meeting. The protest was organised by Joint Action Committee of PIA Employees (JACPIAE). The representatives of the JACPIAE said that they stopped the BoD meeting in the larger interest of the airline and termed the issuance of the Ordinance a mendacious act.
The representatives of JACPIAE demanded the withdrawal of the Presidential Ordinance on immediate basis and if not, they would suspend all PIA operations. They also decided to stage countrywide protests on regular basis till the acceptance of their demand.
