Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman and former president, Asif Ali Zardari has stressed upon the need of effective measures and their implementation to prevent the misuse of laws based on religion.
In his message on the occasion of the fifth death anniversary of former governor Punjab, Salmaan Taseer to be observed today, Asif Zardari paid "homage to the sacrifice of the deceased for laying down his life for protecting minorities and vulnerable sections of society against misuse of religion based laws."
The PPP spokesperson Senator Farhatullah quoted the former President as saying that the bigots and extremists continue to exploit religion-based laws to impose upon the people their own version of religious edicts on the one hand and to stifle dissent on the other.
Zardari said that PPP rejects their narrow and bigoted narrative of Islamic tenets and will continue to oppose and resist them.
He said that on 5th death anniversary of Taseer; let us pledge that collectively we will prevent the misuse of the religion based laws.
It is reassuring that recently the Senate Committee of the Whole also called for reforming the legal regimen to prevent misuse of these laws; he said and expressed the hope that the House of Federation will pursue this noble objective.
He was of the view that Taseer's assassination was not just a loss of a political party but it was a loss of the nation.
