Construction of new emergency block of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) is in the final stage and the new block is expected to be functional by the end of March 2016. An amount of Rs 350 million is being spent by the "Friends of Punjab Institute of Cardiology" on the new block, Chief Executive PIC Professor Dr Nadeem Hayat Malik said.
According to him, around 3,000 patients are getting free medicines for one month from OPDs of the hospital on daily basis. The system has been computerised and a complete database of the patients is prepared while a good Health Information Management System (HIMS) evolved by the help of Punjab Information Technology Board is being implemented.
Professor Nadeem Hayat said that the PIC is specialized hospital, where the cardiac patients come not only from whole Punjab, but also from other provinces, due to which a heavy workload is borne by the hospital. But, due to better administrative measures taken by the hospital administration and teamwork of the doctors and other staff, the performance of PIC has been improved significantly.
Secretary Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Punjab, Najam Ahmad Shah, while chairing a high level meeting to review the matters of Punjab Institute of Cardiology, acknowledged that PIC is providing better healthcare services for the cardiac patients.
He said that more steps would be taken to make this hospital a state-of-the-art institute. He said that cardiac centres, established in other big cities, would also be made more vibrant and active to minimize the workload on PIC.
Chief Executive PIC Professor Dr Nadeem Hayat Malik, Additional Secretary Health (Estb) Ejaz ul Haq, Additional Secretary (Tech) Dr Salman Shahid, Medical Superintendent PIC Dr Suhail Saqlain and other concerned officers attended the meeting. Najam Ahmad Shah appreciated the improvement in the patient management facilities, cleanliness and other disciplines in the PIC and said that Health department would provide full support for further strengthening and improving the performance of the institute. He said that vacant posts of nurses in PIC would also be filled. He said that HIMS and IT Department of PIC is performing effectively, which would be taken up to the optimum level. He observed that PIC could help other hospitals to update their IT system and training of their staff.
Najam Ahmad Shah said that technical assistance from PITB should also be obtained for this purpose. He said that specialized cardiac centres, established in other cities and cardiac units established in different teaching hospitals would be made more effective.
