Alvi elected as President of Pakistan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) leader Arif Alvi was elected as the 13th President of Pakistan on Tuesday .

The ruling government nominated Alvi for the presidential elections whereas, the opposition parties remained divided and fielded two separate candidates. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominated Aitzaz Ahsan, while, the remaining opposition parties fielded Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

According to unofficial and unconfirmed results, from Parliament, Alvi secured 212 votes defeating Rehman and Ahsan who scored 131 and 81 votes, respectively. Ahsan emerged the victor from Sindh Assembly by securing 100 votes, therefore, defeating PTI's Alvi who secured 56.

From Balochistan Assembly, Arif secured 45 to Rehman's 15 votes. From Khyber Pakhtunkhwa PTI's Alvi bagged 78 to Rehman's 26 votes. PPP's candidate secured only 5.

The voting commenced at 10 am and concluded at 4 pm. Voting was held through secret balloting at the Parliament House, Islamabad. The members of Senate, National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies participated in the presidential elections.

Members had been barred from the Election Commission of Pakistan from carrying mobile phones with them during voting. Security personnel were also deployed around the four provincial assemblies as well as the Parliament House.

The current President Mamnoon Hussain's term will expire on September 9.

Dr Alvi bagged victory in the recently held general elections from Karachi’s NA-247 constituency, by securing 90,907 votes.
