Scientists create new self-healing wound dressing material
Technology is also rapidly progressing in medical field as scientists have recently created a new type of self-healing adhesive antibacterial hydrogel that can be used in wound healing treatment.
Though hydrogel wound dressing have gained popularity in recent years, they do have shortcomings like inability to fit the skin and also lack of antibacterial properties. To overcome this inadequacy, Chinese scientists from Xi’an Jiaotong University have designed a self-healing, injectable hydrogel for effective wound healing treatment.
Researchers develop glue that seals wounds in seconds
As per China Daily, the hydrogel has numerous functions including wound dressing, especially for joint skin damage. With high adhesion, the gel can seal wounds of any shape rapidly. It quickly bonds with the wound’s edge, hence providing a physical barrier against contaminants while simulating moist skin conditions.
Also, the hydrogel can help in stopping bleeding and also prevent wound infection, leading to quick healing of the wound. The gel is a skin-like material that displays compressible and stretchable properties, helping in greatly reducing the discomfort caused by the traditional wound dressings.
As per the research published in the journal Biomaterials, the hydrogel has practical importance in health care and has significant potential as effective bioactive wound dressing, reported The Sun.
