The Earthquake Reconstruction, Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) Friday ordered all the contractors to timely complete their projects, otherwise stern action will be taken against them. These warnings were issued at a high-level meeting chaired by the Acting Deputy Chairman ERRA Brigadier Abu Bakr Amin Bajwa and attended by Director General (DG) Planning Engineer Tahir Pervaiz, Projector Directors ERRA, NESPAK officials and other contractors.
ERRA acting Deputy Chairman specially assigned the task to DG Monitoring and Evaluation Wing ERRA to make all their efforts in compelling the contractors to complete their work timely. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed the authority for the completion of all the projects in earthquake-hit areas timely as previous delay caused serious losses to the community as well as the government because of cost escalation.
The meeting noted that most of the projects were inline with set targets however in certain projects progress was slow in terms of the contract and therefore authority issued warning to those contractors who are not going in accordance to directions. It was noted that those contractors who are lethargic and are displaying snail pace of working would not be tolerated as they were causing enormous loss to the national exchequer. The meeting also decided that the reappraisal of the projects would be carried out on regular basis. The authority directed the contractors to ensure quality work and remove impediments which caused delay in the ongoing projects.
The performance of eight contractors were assessed and those whose performance was below par it was decided to terminate their contracts as they had failed to come up with projected timelines despite repeated warning notices. The meeting expressed satisfaction that the ERRA has completed 9,974 projects out of more than 14,000 projects of infrastructure, health, education, sanitation etc worth billions of rupees in AJK and Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.
The meeting welcomed United Nation Body remarks for appreciating the ERRA reconstruction performance after October 8 massive earthquake and their splendid role in relief, rehabilitation and quality reconstruction. Abu Bakr Bajwa said the UN body's appreciation is a pride for Pakistan and its institution immensely contributed in reconstruction of 600,000 homes, roads, hospitals, and other structures which so far resisted over 480 earthquake jolts.
