Coffee exports from El Salvador declined 59 percent in December, compared with the year-earlier period, the national coffee council said on Thursday. Shipments in December totalled 16,399 60-kg bags, compared with 39,880 60-kg bags in the same month in the previous season.
The slide in coffee shipments was due to exporters holding off selling beans, expecting that currently low international prices would rise again, council director Hugo Hernandez said.
The coffee season in Central America and Mexico, which together produce about a fifth of the world's arabica beans, runs from October through September.
