Ministry of Interior on Wednesday issued a notification of extension of special powers to Sindh Rangers under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 for 90 days. A senior official of Ministry of Interior said that Interior Ministry issued a notification under the Article 147 of Constitution, providing a legal cover to the paramilitary force to exercise policing powers under clause 4 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. "It is a notification like the one issued previously on extension of special powers to Rangers," he said.
He said that special powers given to Rangers under the Anti-Terrorism Act had expired on February 3. The Sindh government sent a summary to federal government for revalidating the special policing powers for 90 days on February 2. Earlier, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan telephoned Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah on February 1 and exchanged views regarding Sindh Rangers following a high level meeting.
Khan told Chief Minister Sindh that the extension granted to paramilitary forces in Sindh is going to expire on February 3 therefore it would be better to issue a notification through a joint consultation in order to give positive message regarding Karachi operation. The Chief Minister Sindh sent a summary to the federal government after a cabinet meeting.
