Chairman Senate's Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue Senator Saleem Mandviwalla has convened a meeting of the committee on February 9 to discuss the issue concerning proposed privatisation of PIA. Officials of Privatisation Commission, PIA and ministry of finance have been invited to attend the meeting.
In a statement issued on Friday, Senator Mandviwalla alleged that the PML-N government wanted to purchase PIA, instead of selling it off. "Some advisers of the government are lobbying for this and holding secret meetings in Dubai," he said, urging all opposition parties to keep an eye on these meetinsg.
Accusing PM's Adviser on Aviation, Shujaat Azeem, of openly violating the Supreme Court's order and interfering into the affairs of PIA, he alleged that the PM by rejecting Azeem's resignation has proved that he wanted to privatise PIA at any cost. Senator Mandviwalla also alleged that the government has sold domestic routes of PIA to Gulf Airlines under the garb of its `open sky policy'. He urged the government to review its `open sky policy', saying "no country in the world opens its domestic routes for foreign airlines". He urged the government to present a plan aimed at PIA's revival, instead of its privatisation. He also demanded that a judicial commission should be set up to expose the people responsible for PIA losses.
