This is apropos a Business Recorder op-ed "Way out of mounting debt trap" by M Ziauddin. The writer has argued that "Today we are just about to become a trans-shipment economy because China wants to shorten its reach to world markets from 45 to 12 days. And with Chinese shipments traversing Pakistan round the clock, we can now afford to allow transit trade facility to India without any security reservations."
He seems to have overlooked the sensitivities involved in bilateral relationship between Pakistan and India. New Delhi has already tried to erect hurdles, albeit unsuccessfully, by raising objection over the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Allowing transit facility to India could be fraught with dangerous security consequences for the country. This may not be possible unless India and Pakistan make serious efforts toward defusing tensions in an effective and meaningful manner. Hence the need for greater caution and care while underscoring the need for granting such facility to India.
