The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will hold Local Government (LG) elections for reserved seats in Sindh from February 20 to 22. The elections will be held to fill indirect seats in Union Councils, district councils, town committees, municipal committees, corporations and Metropolitan Corporation said a notification issued by the ECP on Friday.
The commission fixed polling dates for indirect seats of district councils, municipal corporations, district municipal corporations and Metropolitan Corporation on February 20 whereas for indirect elections of seats of Union Councils, union committees, town committees and municipal committees on February 22. The ECP also directed the voters of relevant councils, committees, and corporations to elect members to the seats notified by the provincial government of Sindh.
The controversy over election of heads of Local Bodies has taken an interesting turn after the Sindh High Court decision declaring their upcoming election through show of hands null and void. The opposition parties in Sindh had challenged an amendment in the Local Government law approved by the Sindh Assembly whereby the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors and other representatives was to be held through show of hands instead of secret ballot.
