Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded of the government for a bailout package worth Rs 30 billion to restore the functions of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and bring reforms in the institution, instead of blindly pursuing the privatisation policy. He expressed these views on Saturday while addressing a protest demonstration being held outside the Karachi Press Club by Pakistan Steel Officers Ittehad, against the proposed privatisation and other severe issues being faced by the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).
Engr. Naeem demanded of the government to ensure immediate release of salaries of the PSM employees. He was of the view that privatisation of national institutions is not a solution of problems but reforms are. He also demanded of the government to take advantage of proposals, being offered by China and Russia for overhauling of PSM. He said that JI stands shoulder to shoulder with PSM employees and opposes the privatisation policy.
He said that the government should take the issue of PSM seriously as suspension of salaries has been resulting in starvation of the employees and their families. The JI leader also lambasted the government for its failure in discharging of liabilities to the retired employees of PSM.
A large number of PSM employees took part in the protest. They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against privatisation of PSM and suspension of salaries and function of the mills. Pakistan Steel Officers Ittehad leaders Mirza Maqsood, Shahid Allahwala, besides leaders of others unions and association addressed the protesters.
