Director Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Akbar Hoti on Saturday allowed the investigation team to visit Britain and Sri Lanka to collect evidence in Imran Farooq murder case. The team will go abroad to obtain evidence to finalise challan in the case. All the three murder suspects including Khalid Shamim, Moazzam Ali and Kashif Khan Kamran are currently on judicial remand at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Sources said that Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali have already recorded their confessional statements while Moazzam Ali, said to be the prime suspect, was unwilling to come up with a confession. In his statement, Mohsin said that Moazzam had handled the travel documents to live in the United Kingdom. Giving graphic details of the murder, Mohsin said they monitored the movement of Dr Imran Farooq in London to know about his routine. On the day of the murder, he said, he grabbed Dr Farooq while Kashif stabbed him and then bludgeoned him with a brick.
Imran Farooq, 50, a founding member of the MQM party was stabbed and beaten to death in Edgware, north-west London in September 2010. Imran Farooq claimed asylum in Britain in 1999. He was wanted in Pakistan over scores of charges including torture and murder but always claimed the accusations were politically motivated. He had twice been elected an MP in Pakistan, but went into hiding in 1992 when the government ordered a military crackdown against party activists in Karachi.
