Opposition leader in the National Assembly Khurshid Shah said Wednesday the government has planned to amend the law only once the National Accountability Bureau decided to become active in Punjab. He said the Pakistan Peoples' Party has been advocating for abolishing the Bureau since 2008. No one was objecting to Bureau's action when it was active in Sindh, he added.
Speaking at a function in connection with the 'Hameed Nizami' day at the Aiwan-e-Iqbal, he said a strong opposition is essential for a strong democracy. "A weak Parliament gives birth to a weak democracy," he added. He said the prime minister was in the habit of delaying decisions, as his party was asking for revocation of the law relating to Bureau since 2008 and proposed to constitute a Parliamentary Commission against corruption. However, no attention was given to this proposal as the Bureau was active in smaller province and this idea was entertained only when it initiated its actions in Punjab.
He also made a sarcastic remark that the people in Punjab are "sacred cows" and corruption is restricted to smaller provinces. He urged the government to learn from history. He also criticised the government for objecting to the entry of Rangers in Punjab. He also underscored the need for prioritising education and health on metro bus and orange line train project.
