Horse and cattle show, traditionally known as "Sibi Mela", which started on February 25, is in full swing. It will continue till March 3. The historic event, which is being celebrated for the last many centuries in the month of February every year, reflects the real traditions and culture of Balochistan. Residents of the province, along with local animals, participate in the traditional show, which is visited by people from across the country.
The Mela was kicked off with traditional funfare, zeal and fervour. According to traditions, since 15th Century tribal people of Balochistan used to meet at Sibi, some 163 kilometres off Quetta. Along side this annual meeting called Jirga, a festival (Mela) was also held, which was participated by thousands of Baloch tribesmen.
The main attractions of Sbi Mela are: horse and cattle shows, folk dances, cultural shows, tent pegging, camel race and exhibitions of handicrafts and tribal dresses, Mushairas (poetry events), musical shows and circus, besides other colourful activities. Thousands of animals, including camels, are brought to the show for sale.
