Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM)'s Central Co-ordination Committee in London and Karachi jointly condemned and rejected the allegations levelled by former MQM's men Mustafa Kamal and Anees Qaimkhani against party chief Altaf Hussain. "Altaf Hussain genuinely wants to change the destiny of people," said Nadeem Nusrat, party's convenor, while talking to Karachi-based media people via telephone in the presence of MQM's officials at Nine Zero on Thursday.
He asked: "Had Altaf committed a sin by choosing a telephone operator [Mustafa Kamal?] for the slot of mayorship of Karachi?" He urged the ruling establishment of Pakistan to abandon it "minus-Altaf" approach without any further loss of time. He also taunted the powers that be by saying that an Oscar for flopped films should go to the Director for Mustafa Kamal's press conference.
"This is a question for establishment how long this sort of politics will continue. How long will they continue planting artificial leadership and divide political parties? For God sake, talk to Altaf Hussain instead of banishing him," he said. MQM Pakistan-based co-ordination committee also termed the allegations an insult to the intelligence and wisdom of those who voted for the MQM.
"The return of Mustafa Kamal and Anees Qaimkhani is part of a conspiracy but MQM stands by Altaf Hussain," said party leader Farooq Sattar. He said that PTI should not talk of 2013 mandate. Instead, they should talk of NA-246 and after that they should talk of local council elections in which people gave a clear mandate to MQM. He advised Kamal to support Wasim Akhtar, the elected mayor of Karachi, and help him by sharing his experience if "he truly sympathises with the people of Karachi".
BR staff reporter adds: Farooq Sattar termed the allegations "baseless, shameful and condemnable." He said allegations levelled by Kamal and Qaimkhani were not new and "such nefarious attempts were also made in past to destroy the party and to bring a parallel one." Elaborating, he said "some elements have been hell bent upon hatching conspiracies to implement minus-Altaf Formula," he said and added that if one deeply looks into the timings of these two persons' press conference, "it will explain the whole reality." Naeem Nusrat said "those who did not have any mandate spoke against Altaf and elected representatives of the party."
"In democratic countries, the leadership's popularity is measured through his vote bank. Altaf has 24 National Assembly (MNAs) members, eight Senators, 52 members of provincial assembly and hundreds of representatives in the local bodies," he added. Nusrat criticised media for "creating an issue out of a non-issue" and targeting a renowned chief of a popular party and millions of party supporters for three consecutive hours. Jamaat-e-Islami had already been levelling similar allegations against MQM, but voters rejected all such assertions by re-electing MQM leaders in NA-246 by-poll.
