Expressing displeasure over Sindh police's performance, the Supreme Court on Monday remarked that peace has returned to the province only because of Rangers. A larger bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, resumed the hearing of Karachi law and order case after a 20-month gap. Other members of the bench were Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, Justice Khilji Arif, Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Azmat Saeed.
Inspector General, Sindh Police, Ghulam Haider Jamali, submitted a report of police performance, stating that there was a huge decrease in the crime rate, including the cases of targeted killings and terrorism. The bench, however, termed the report as incomplete and unsatisfactory and directed the IGP to submit a new report at the next hearing, which is scheduled for Tuesday.
The Rangers' counsel also submitted a report, requesting the court to prosecute the suspects involved in terrorism activities, targeted killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom. The Rangers' lawyer stated that they had arrested the main suspect in Safoora carnage case but he was later released. The Rangers' counsel requested the court to allow policing powers to them such as registering FIRs, submitting challans and establishing police stations. The bench remarked that Rangers and police should cooperate with each other instead of playing a blame game.
