The Supreme Court on Thursday restored the stay order on mayoral elections across Sindh, including Karachi, after accepting the adjournment application of MQM's and PML-F's counsel Senator Farogh Naseem in the matter. Earlier, the top court had stayed the mayors and deputy mayors' elections across Sindh in response to identical pleas filed against Sindh High Court (SHC) verdict which had declared provincial government's amendment to the local government law that replaced secret ballot with a show of hands to choose representatives in the province as void.
While staying the SHC verdict, the apex court said that it will announce a final order in the matter after a detailed examination of High Court judgement. On Thursday, after accepting the adjournment application of Dr Naseem who was busy before Karachi registry bench in a Karachi law and order case, a three-member bench led by Justice Gulzar Ahmed issued notices to Attorney General for Pakistan and Advocate General for KPK in the matter. The hearing the case was adjourned for an indefinite period.
