Additional Inspector General of Sindh Police, Musthaq Mahar, said here on Monday that the police department with a view to curbing the menace of cell phone snatching cases was developing software for biometric registration of cellular phones. He also announced that a campaign against illegal weapons would be launched next month.
He was speaking at a meeting of Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (Kati). Kati's president Zahid Saeed, patron-in-chief S.M. Muneer, senior vice president Saleem-uz-zaman, vice president Sayyed Wajid Hussain, executive committee members, former KATI chairman Gulzar Feroze, Akbar Farooqui, Dr Kamran Fazal, DIG South Dr Jameel and a number of industrialists were present on the occasion.
Claiming that incidence of murder and kidnapping for ransom have been reduced by about 70 per cent in the city, the AIG said that carjacking and snatching cases are on the lowest level of 15 years. Referring to street crimes and vehicle snatching cases, he said that that the police was working on a plan to bring an end to these crimes. In this regard, he told the meeting that the number of special surveillance points to overcome the incidence of street crimes in the city has now been increased from 35 to 50, besides CCTV cameras have been installed at different places with the help of NGOs and individuals. The AIG was, however, of the view that Mahar that traffic jams due to the sewerage and the utilities' maintenance work was also one of the causes of mugging and cell phone snatching incidents.
He said that Rangers and police were co-operating with each other in curbing the criminal activities from the city. Lauding the role of Kati in maintaining law and order situation in the industrial area, the AIG said that police will use new technology to make the industrial area a model for fighting against crimes. At the outset, the AIG informed the industrialists that police was focusing on police reforms, saying that special resource centres would be made functional shortly.
Speaking on the occasion, Kati's patron-in-chief S.M. Muneer said that incidence of extortion in the city have almost come to an end. He also condemned the recent attacks on Rangers' check posts. Kati's president Zahid Saeed appreciated the role of Karachi police and Sindh Rangers in restoring peace in the metropolis. The meeting was also addressed by Senator Abdul Haseeb Khan, CPLC Chief Zubair Habib, Zubair Chaya, Nadeem Khan.
