The four-day '14th Balijee International Bridge Championship' will get underway here at the Lahore Gymkhana from Sunday with participation of accomplished bridge players from all over Pakistan and abroad. This was stated by Aijaz Ahmed of Yummy Milk Products at a press conference at Lahore Gymkhana on Thursday. He said the event is being held after a gap of nearly six years.
Ihsan Qadir, the tournament Director stated that the championship is sponsored by Ajaz Ahmad of Yummy Milk Product (Pvt) Ltd. As was in the case of the previous 13 such championships, this 14th edition is also being held in memory of his late father Muhammad Iqbal profoundly known to his fraternity as Balijee.
He said that invitations were extended to teams from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, UAE and Jordan.
As of now confirmation of participation has been received from a ladies team of Lebanon and an open team from Jordan. One single Indian from Bombay has accepted the invitation and will take part in the Championship as part of one of the teams from Karachi. In this regard, the teams from Bangladesh have also accepted the invitation with confirmation still awaited.
Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed stated that from within the country, 12 teams from Karachi, four from Rawalpindi/Islamabad, one team each from Multan, Hyderabad and Abottabad have agreed to participate. Lahore also will be strongly represented and the teams participating are 12 in number.
Amongst the Ladies Tea the Team of Rubina Agha, Zeenat Azwer Paro Raza & Rehana Saigol (Pakistan Bridge Federations Ex President) and Yummy Consisting of Tahira Nasir, Tahira Liaqat from Lahore will be the strong contenders. A Ladies team is also expected from Islamabad.
Regarding the tournament format, it was explained that it shall consist of two types of contests, the Pairs Contest and the Swiss Team of four contest. The Pairs Contest will be held over three sessions and all players will be up against 75% of the opponents.
