University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Friday inaugurated 'Green Pakistan Programme' at the Directorate of Farms, UAF. Speaking on the occasion, he said that government was taking tangible steps to increase forest cover in the country. He lauded the Prime Minister's 'Green Pakistan Programme' initiative, under which over 100 million trees would be planted.
He said that UAF was providing assistance to the government in terms of manpower and research to run the programme effectively. He said that in 1990, the country's forest cover was 3.4 percent, which had now reduced to 2 percent. He said that the management of forest and wildlife resources of the country needed to be developed in line with the best international practices. He claimed that the UAF had emerged as 25th Green University of the globe and due to excessive plantation, the climate temperature at UAF remained less than rest of the city. Professor Dr Abdus Salam said people must be made aware about the potential hazards of deforestation.
