The 31st Multi Topic Symposium of Pakistan Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEEP) concluded here in Karachi. Engr Jawed Salim Qureshi Chairman Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) was the chief guest. In his address Engr Salim Qureshi lauded the services of IEEEP to the engineering profession. He said PEC wanted more concrete interaction between industry and academia; therefore it was planning exhibitions of projects by engineering students where top industrialists would be invited.
He stressed the need for students to understand the demands of industry and prepare projects in line with their demands. He announced that PEC would award a prize of one million rupees to the best project by a student. Earlier, a panel discussion was held on the topic of "Coal Based Power vs Hydro Electric Power Preferred Solution?"
The panelists included Khalid Javed Chief Operating Officer K-Electric, Professor Dr Nasim A Khan, Senior Executive Director Osmani & Company, Syed Abrar Ali Consultant Power Generation Osmani and Company and Ronald Desouza. The session was moderated by Engr Sibte Ahmad Jafri.
The panelists agreed in general that coal-based power is detrimental to the environment and should be avoided. About hydropower they were in favour of smaller dams and the general consensus was that "Pakistan should do what is within our means and in attempts to emulate other countries not miss the chance it has to do in the local framework through locally available resources and expertise."
The panel seemed much in favour of wind and solar and pointed out that Pakistan was lagging far behind countries that had less sunshine in the matter of solar energy. Small, affordable, sustainable and indigenous was the formula presented by panelists for power solution to the country. Small village cantered power generation rather than huge dams was the message conveyed.
A keynote speech was also delivered in this session by guest speaker from India. Engr Jamshed Akhtar writer and Scholar gave a presentation on "Scientific Information in Quran". It was a very interesting presentation in which he described methods which can be adopted to decipher scientific knowledge from the Holy Quran. The session concluded by presentation of awards. A life time Achievement Award was presented to Engr Sibte Ahmad Jafri for his lifelong service to the profession.-PR
