National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) Director General Colonel Siraj-ul-Naeem (Retd) on Thursday said that corruption was a greater threat to business sector in Pakistan, adding that due to mega corruption in different sectors of Pakistan, the country was losing at least 133 million dollars every day. Addressing a seminar titled "Awareness and Prevention against Corruption", organised by University of Karachi in collaboration with NAB at KU Arts Auditorium, the DG showed concern that Pakistan has been ranked the 117th most corrupt country out of the 168 countries.
The DG said that after interference and action of NAB in Sindh province, they had successfully got cancelled registration of 24,000 acres of land, which was illegally allotted to some favourite people in violation of law. This land worth Rs 4trillion was returned back to the Sindh government, he added.
He said that illegal allotment of at least 0.3 million acres of land in 56 villages of district Thatta was also cancelled in Sindh which was incorporated in Village Form VII in the name of fake and suspicious owners by amending the Record of Rights. "NAB never compromises on merit, neither external nor internal pressure is taken in any case," he said, adding that in fact the NAB is free from all sorts of pressures. Siraj said that recruitment process in NAB was very tough and its officials work day and night as well as get training on daily basis from foreign investigative agencies.
The DG said that there is no enquiry going on against University of Karachi in the NAB. He said that some news released by some media houses a few months back in this regard were nothing but rumours. KU's Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Qaiser said that eradication of corruption was pivotal for country's growth and stability. "Our youth must play a vital role to fight against corruption as students will be on key governmental positions and will be deciding the fate of the nation. These sorts of programmes will be held on regular basis in different faculties of the varsity as well so that we all can play a positive role fighting against corruption," he added. Dean KU Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi said that Corruption was the menace our society.
