Prices of rice, sugar, chicken, milk, fruits, vegetables and cooking oils, etc have risen notably during last couple of weeks, putting pressure on overall consumer prices. The traders in provincial capital Peshawar have attributed that prices have gone up by 50 to 70 per cent due to low supply in market, however, they say prices would be stabilised in coming days with arrival of fresh food items.
Chicken (live) price has gone up at Rs 188 per kilogram, which was selling at Rs 140 per kg during the preceding week, while chicken is being sold at Rs 320 and Rs 300, against the Rs 220 and Rs 250. Fresh milk being sold at Rs 100 per litre, while price of milk powder with various brands, has remained stable in the market, according to survey conducted by Business Recorder here on Sunday. It further noticed that the cow meat is being sold at Rs 320/- per kg, against the official fixed price of Rs 220/- per kg while one kilogram mutton available at Rs 600 and Rs 650.
A slight increase was witnessed in prices of veggies, as one-kilogram tomato is being sold at Rs 40 per kilogram, against the Rs 25 per kilogram, while price of onion has gone up at Rs 40 per kilogram, against the price of Rs 30 per kilogram, during the preceding week. Ginger is being sold at Rs 100 per kilogram, garlic at Rs 100 per and Rs 150 per kg, while cucumber was available at Rs 30 per kilogram.
The survey further said a one-kilogram, capsicum being sold at Rs 80, ladyfinger at Rs 100 per kg, peas at Rs 100 per kg, potato at Rs 30 per kg, green chilli at Rs 20 per kg, lemon at Rs 70 per kg, cabbage at Rs 50 per kg, cauliflower at Rs 40 per kg.
One kilogram quality rice is available at Rs 110, which was selling at Rs 90 and Rs 100, while one-kilogram sugar being sold at Rs 65 against the Rs 62 per kg, according to survey. It was also noticed a moderate increase in prices of all varieties of pulses; as Dal Channa at Rs 140 per kg, Dal green 160 per kg, dotti dal at Rs 160 per kg, Dal Masoor at Rs 260 per kg, Dal mash chilka, 260 per kg, big Channa at Rs 140 per kg, white bean at Rs 100 per kg, and moonge at Rs 140 per kg.
While prices of all brands and varieties of cooking oil/ghee, have remained stable in the retail market, a one-kg cooking oil available within range of Rs 150, Rs 160 and Rs 170, while one kilogram ghee packet begin sold at Rs 170, Rs 180 and Rs 190, the survey said.
The flour prices have gone up in wholesale and retail markets as 85-kg bag is available at Rs 3,900, which was selling at Rs 3,600 in the last week as compared to the preceding week. Similarly, the retail rates also steadily increased as fine flour is being sold at Rs 46 per kg against the Rs 38 per kg, while brown atta being available at Rs 42 per kg against the Rs 32 per kg in the last week.
The survey further noticed that one-kg powder milk, being sold at Rs 640, fresh milk is available at Rs 90 and Rs 70 per litre, yogurt being sold at Rs 90 and Rs 80 per kg. Carton pack milk of various companies and brand is available with different rates, as a carton of 12 packs; weight one-litre is being sold at Rs 1100, Rs 1050, Rs 910 and Rs 860.
According to survey, Apple is being sold at Rs 120 per kg, melon at Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kg, strawberry at Rs 70 per kg, orange at Rs 150 per dozen, banana at Rs 50 and Rs 60 per dozen, guava at Rs 120 per kg, kinnow at Rs 80 and Rs 100 per dozen.
"Is anybody to check the soaring prices of the essential foods commodities", said a Jamal Khan, a buyer who was purchasing chicken in local market. He said district government turned to deaf ears and reluctant to take action against the price hike in the provincial capital. He said the increases in prices of daily use items, had completely out from purchasing power of the common man. He urged the government to take notice of the increasing prices of essential kitchen commodities.
