Reserving its judgement in a matter about mayoral elections in Sindh, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Thursday said a short order would be announced on Friday (today). A three-member bench of the Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali resumed the hearing of identical pleas filed against Sindh High Court's (SHC) decision that had declared provincial government's amendment to the local government law, which had replaced secret ballot with a show of hands to choose representatives in the province, as void.
Concluding his arguments on behalf of the Sindh government, Farooq H Naek apprised the bench that the schedule of mayors' and deputy mayors' elections in the province has not been issued so far. He informed the court that provincial government and MQM have no rift over reserved seat quota percentage for youth, saying, the Sindh Assembly has passed a bill to eradicate horse trading culture from the politics.
Responding to the contention of Naek that no right of anybody would be breached if mayoral elections are held in the province through a show of hands, the Chief Justice Jamali said that political parties have challenged the amendment on grounds that their rights have been violated. Naek pleaded that the verdict of the court in the current matter shall have impact over other provinces of the country in addition to Sindh province.
Responding to media after the hearing of the case, Waseem Akhtar of the MQM said that Amir Liaqat had suggested in a television talk show the other day that a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and recently created Pak Sarzameen people would play a pivotal role in resolving the current political crisis. However, PPP Senator Saeed Ghani said his party will support the PML-N in case of any attempt made to derail democracy in the country.
