Pakistan art scene is changing for the last few years. Now people are viewing, buying and also understanding contemporary art. But art lovers who added contemporary art to their collection later found that it has no resale value. Because the people who bought this genre of art did not have sense or understanding of contemporary art then.
But slowly some galleries study contemporary art and picked quality works of old and new talented artists and exhibited them in their galleries. Sanat Gallery, Karachi is one of such galleries who took initiative of studying and spreading awareness of this genre of art. From then a few of the contemporary artist's artworks displayed in galleries, museums and auction houses around the globe as well as some were also permanently displayed in foreign Museums.
As the art enthusiasts have regular encounters with contemporary art in the galleries they not only began to understand this type of art and they also got interested in quality work of traditional painters. Lately some traditional artist's works that once sold like hotcakes whatever they paint saw decline in their sale as people now bought the selective and quality works of famed artists also.
Like other countries of the world the art is changing fast similarly in Pakistan. While talking to Abid Merchant, Sanat Gallery, Karachi owner I asked why he has chosen contemporary art to promote through his gallery, he elaborated that our rural areas had talented artists who came to big cities to study art in higher art institutions and after completion of their studies they went back to their home towns. They practice at home but do not get chance to display or promote their art. Many of those young artists were much interested in practicing contemporary art as the mood of the art world around the globe is revolving nowadays around this genre of art. These immature but talented artists have no venue to display and promote their art I simply gave them a place where they can show their achievements and also got encouragement and promotion which they deserve.
A recent group exhibition of young artists titled "Neon" at Sanat Gallery, Karachi is also such initiative. Curated by artist Muhammad Zeeshan the exhibition included artworks of five artists: Safeer Sandeelo, Faraz Aamer Khan, Rabia Farooqui, Marjan Baniasadi and Taha Ali.
Muhammad Zeeshan is a nationally and internationally famed artist and he is pursuing his career in art along with teaching art in a reputed art institution. He has voluntarily curated various exhibition of upcoming young artists free of cost. On asking the reason he told me that he promote these new artist and serve as a link between these artists and a gallery because when he was young and new others also helped him in such way and he return that good gesture to others by curating exhibitions and that's the motivation behind his work as a curator.
The artworks by the artists reflected the title of the exhibition. Being their first exhibition each young artist tried to create his/her own signature style by using their unusual imaginations in producing distinct works. Having different cultural backgrounds and art education the gallery showed an amalgamation of ideas and mode of expressions.
The diverse artworks by the artists also indicated a bright future of art in our country. Hence experimentation and invention are the key factors that provide stairs to reach new venues and heights in any field of art and science.
The exhibition uncovered their skills and abilities to the world. Their original and inspired images revealed optimism and hope that is necessary for young generation to excel in their careers.
Less is more was the motto of the artists as they concentrated on quality work rather quantity. The artists covered various themes in their works from environment to social. They explored the relationship to human beings in the world be with environment, with one another, with media, with culture and with own self.
The artworks have particular thoughts that may or may not be voiced before. The variety of cultural and traditional colours combined with their own views created an atmosphere of different moods and tones.
Some of the works were in black and white while some have monochromatic tones in others rainbow of colours welcomed the viewers thus when viewing the displayed works one was experiencing a constant change that naturally pleased the eyes and also energizes the thoughts of the viewer.
The representation of views and interpretation of thoughts in the form of images helped understanding their knowledge and awareness of surrounding and their own personality thus transforming their lives experiences in their self-expressions and symbolic impressions in a hope to convey their message to others.
The artists explored their art through this exhibition and will help them improve for the better in future and hopefully this experience will flourish their abilities more. [email protected]
