Local traders and merchants have complained the poor security arrangements at the largest fruit and vegetable trading and exporting market (Enkelaab Sabzi mandi) in Peshawar. They have demanded of government to establish a full-fledged police at check post and patrolling mobile at the market, to ensure safety and protection to them.
Addressing a news conference at press club here on Saturday, All Pakistan Agriculture Produce Traders Federation (APAPTF), President Malik Sohni said the Enkelaab vegetable and fruit market, is largest exporting food items point in Peshawar, which had important role to boost trade with neighbouring Afghanistan and rest of regional countries. But, he said there was no proper security system at the Enkelaab market that was posing great security threats to traders.
Flanked by President Merchant Association, Pir Ali Marjan, Vice president Haji Ghauncha Gul, Office Secretary Zahir Muhammad, and Special Secretary Wahid Gul, he said the traders' community received threatening calls by extortionist from unknown mobile SIMs, while incidents of crime have also risen at the market. He demanded of the government to establish a full-fledged police check post at the Enkelaab Sabzi mandi.
"Traders are contributing to national economy by paying regular various taxes, besides, they have playing important role in boosting of trade relations with regional countries, Sohni said. He added despite the fact, the government remained step-motherly attitude with traders, and didn't take appropriate steps for their protection and safety. He urged the management of Muslim Commercial Bank (MCB) and Allied Bank Limited (ABL) to establish their branches in the market.
Zahir Muhammad said the security is a major issue of traders, which should be resolved on priority basis. He said the government prime responsibility to ensure protection of live and properties of the masses, adding that traders regularly paying number of taxes, despite the fact, the government didn't provide them adequate facilities. He said if the government would not be able to provide security and not establishing police check post at Enkelaab market, then, he asked it should issue arms license to them.
Pir Ali Marjan said that the Enkelaab fruit and vegetable market has pivotal role to enhance trade with Afghanistan, and rest of Central Asian Republic countries. He complained despite the fact, the government was least bother to provide them facilities and didn't take steps for development at the vegetable and fruits market in Peshawar.
He said incidents of snatching money on gun point were routinely occurred at the Enkelaab, despite the deployment of personals of police force. The traders warned that if the government was failed to accept their demands within a week, then they would decide the future of action in this regard, he concluded.
