The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is paying special attention to technical and vocational education and training for enhancement of better job opportunities for the skilled workforce of the province. Chairman of KP Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (KP-Tevta) Arshad Umerzai said this here on Wednesday, while addressing a group of reporters from Peshawar.
He informed that TVET was not only important for economic development but would also ensure reduction in poverty and provision of better livelihood to the young population of the province.
The journalists visited the Government College of Technology (GCT) Mingora where the Competency Based Training and Assessment on micro hydel power technician was being offered. He said the KP government was trying to establish technical and vocational institutes in each district and tehsil level to produce skilled labour because 24 percent labourers, working oversees belonged to KP - most of them lacked the skills.
He said Tevta recently initiated competency based training (CBT) in 13 different technical training institutes across KP for ensuring better employability and qualified workforce for the province and abroad. This new training programme is supported by the TVET Reform Support Programme which is funded by the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Royal Norwegian Embassy.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) implements this Programme in close collaboration with National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) and provincial Tevtas.
Under the reform programme, KP Tevta has made remarkable achievements in terms of policy formulation as representatives have given input in the formulation of national TVET policy and National Vocational Qualification Frame work (NVQF). Besides policy documents, the overall structure of KP Tevta has been standardised in line with current trends and needs in TVET delivery through exposure visit to Sri Lanka and Indonesia as well as in country exposure visit to learn best practices.
Around 1,232 teachers have been trained in 79 In Service Training (IST) courses, conducted all across the country and capacity of teachers have been enhanced to undertake responsibilities for execution of competency based training and assessment programme.
