Microsoft tests ‘warning’ users not to install Chrome, Firefox

Attempting to attract more people to its own web browser, software giant Microsoft is testing a ‘warning’ for Windows 10 users for not installing Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome, prompting them to use Microsoft Edge first.

Microsoft is currently in the last stages of testing its new Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Testers have recently spotted a new change in Microsoft that appears when someone tries to install a competitor web browser such as Chrome or Firefox.

As per The Verge, when users run Chrome or Firefox installers on the new Windows 10 October 2018 Update, a warning appears that reads, “You already have Microsoft Edge – the safer, faster browser for Windows 10”.

The pop-up gives the option of ‘Open Microsoft Edge’ or ‘Install anyway’, depending on users’ choice. The feature can, however, be disabled by going into Settings. Developer Sean Hoffman spotted the new prompt and took to Twitter to express his feelings about it.

Even Mozilla Firefox felt weird about the feature and regarded it as ‘awkward’.

According to CNET Microsoft said in a statement, “We’re currently testing this functionality with insiders only. The Windows Insider Program enables Microsoft to test different features, functionality and garner feedback before rolling out broadly. Customers remain in control and can choose the browser of their choice.”

Moreover, since it is still in testing mode, there is no guarantee if this will be included in the final version set to release this year in October or not, wrote Engadget.
