Around 206 degrees were conferred to graduates of various disciplines during the second convocation of Khyber Medical University (KMU) Peshawar, held at main auditorium of the university here on Thursday. In the convocation, 46 gold medals also awarded to top position holders of different programmes. Special shields were also awarded to 13 eminent persons who served KMU in different capacities. It is worth mentioning that student of KIMS; Kohat Dr Aqsa Ibrar grabbed 13 gold medals in MBBS and become star of the event.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra was the chief guest at the convocation. Besides, Professor Dr Muhammad Hafiz, Vice Chancellor of KMU Peshawar, faculty members, eminent health professionals, faculty, parents of the graduates and a large number of students were also present at the occasion. Dr Muhammad Hafiz, while presenting the university annual report, said KMU nurtured competence through learning and innovation to prepare visionary leaders across all fields to optimise health and health care of individuals and communities. He said KMU in its journey of nine years, tried to identify gaps in the field of health and then fill them after extensive consultation and planning. The aim was to provide access in those fields hitherto not available in this region.
He added that KMU had earned a well-deserved placed in the field of research and "we proud to host seven health research conferences and launched four research journals. KMU offers the role of standardisation and setting higher goals in curriculum, evaluation and mode of instruction in medical and health education by poling of resources and intellect through innovation and scholarship."
In his keynote address, KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra said "a university distinguishes itself as a fountain of knowledge and is entrusted with the responsibility of creation, dissemination and preservation of knowledge and being sole public sector medical university of the province KMU shoulders a heavy mandate to provide academic stewardship and conduct meaningful research in all health related fields." He reiterated that the degrees conferred upon the newly graduates meant new responsibilities and more devotion to their work as compared to other professions as they are dealing with precious human lives.
