Providing marginalized communities, especially orphans a conducive, open and dynamic learning environment with an objective to enable them to compete with others is the need of the hour. This was stated by speakers at an art exhibition organised by the Department of Architecture and Design, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad held here on Tuesday.
Providing a creative and ideal blend of academic and non-academic learning activities for students of marginalized communities especially orphans, it is necessary to enable them to compete with others. The art exhibition, showcasing paintings and greeting cards created by students of SOS village Islamabad in workshop on painting arranged for them by CIIT. Speakers said that providing them a conducive, open and dynamic learning environment with an objective to enable them to compete with others was need of the hour, adding that such activities help build confidence among the students.
Head of Department (HoD) Department of Architecture CIIT, Hammad Husain said that CIIT is undertaking this community service for directly impacting the lives of children, who need a lot of support and care; while exposing them to the university environment. Another objective is to educate CIIT's Architecture & Design students to become socially responsible citizens, by participating in such events, he added. The exhibition consisting of 54 fabulous paintings and over 150 greeting cards, was inaugurated by Salman Farooqi, the Federal Ombudsman, flanked by Rector CIIT, Dr S M Junaid Zaidi, at the CIIT Art Gallery, Library Basement, and will remain open till today (18th May 2016).
Around 20 SOS Village Islamabad students, aged between 14 and 17 years enrolled in Matric, who had demonstrated the potential to learn the art of painting, were chosen by their school to participate in the one-week workshop on art, organised by the Department of Architecture and Design, CIIT, from May 2nd till 6th 2016.
The participating children learnt many techniques of painting and produced beautiful greeting cards and many paintings under the supervision of CIIT faculty who helped them polish their skills. The basic idea behind the whole effort is to sell the artwork of the children and donate the money collected to the SOS Village, while encouraging the students to gain confidence and develop their creative abilities.
Aisha Asim Imdad, and HoD Department of Architecture, Hammad Husain, presented an overview of the community outreach programme, which was followed by screening of a very interesting 3-minute documentary on how the workshop helped transform the children's abilities and skills.
Member of committee managing SOS Village Islamabad, Fareeha, talked about the impact the workshop and the art exhibition had on the children and thanked Rector CIIT for organising the event and invited them to visit the 'village'. Later, certificates were distributed amongst the participating students, after which a souvenir and painting were presented to the chief guest by Rector CIIT and HoD Department of Architecture & Design. This was followed by a musical program by students of the department. Rector CIIT said that his institutions plans to organise similar events in future as it attaches high importance to social responsibility and community service and believes all universities must play their role in bringing about a positive change in society.
