The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday asked Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law, Captain Mohammad Safdar (retd) to appear on June 1 before ECP to explain why he purportedly concealed assets of his wife Maryam Nawaz in his nomination papers.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf member Nawabzada Salahuddin Saeed filed a petition against Captain Safdar (retd). He stated that Safdar had not mentioned in his nomination papers the ownership of foreign properties of his wife as revealed in the Panama Papers.
The petitioner appealed to the ECP to disqualify Safdar and launch criminal proceedings against him for concealing his assets.
As stated by the ECP, this is necessarily required under Section 42A of the Representation of the People Act, 1976 - 'Annually submission of statements of assets and liabilities.' Legal actions can also be taken against legislators who submit wrong statements in accordance with Section 82 of the Representation of People Act - 'Penalty for corrupt practice.'
In his annual statement to ECP, the MNA declared that a BMW 2006 worth Rs 6 million received by Mariam Safdar. Others, he owns a residential plot in E-12/4 Islamabad, one kanal plot and 160 kanal agriculture land in Mansehra, six kanals and 14 marlas of barren land in Rajan Pur, Rs 2 million bank remittance in Saudi Riyals, gold worth Rs 1 million, cash 2 million and Rs 200,000 worth of furniture.
