Over a matter relating to illegal appointments scam in Employees Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) during 2010, the top court on Monday hinted at the possibility of summoning former Federal Minister for Labour and Manpower Syed Khursheed Shah and Secretary of the Ministry Arif Azeem. A three-member bench led by the Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali resumed the hearing of contempt proceedings against former chairman and secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Manpower over illegal appointments in the EOBI.
Appearing before the bench, Deputy Prosecutor General of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) said the Bureau was gathering evidence after filing 11 references against the accused in the matter. Responding to a court query, the DPG submitted that the Bureau has not filed a reference against former secretary of the labour and manpower ministry Arif Azeem.
To which, the bench observed that prima facie the then federal minister for labour and manpower, Syed Khursheed Shah, secretary of the ministry Arif Azeem and the Chairman of the EOBI Zafar Iqbal Gondal violated court's directives in the case. Issuing a notice to the Attorney General for Pakistan in the matter, the court adjourned proceedings for two weeks.
