Upon arrival of dead body of Professor Dr Abida Taherani, Vice-Chancellor, University of Sindh, Jamshoro in the early hours of Saturday morning at Jinnah International Airport Karachi, the same was brought in a swarming number of teachers, officers, intellectuals, civil society leaders, community chieftains, employees, community members and students first to the Vice-Chancellor House and later it was taken to its burial site ie 'the vicinity of Allama I.I. Kazi Mausoleum'. Here, her funeral prayers and last rituals were performed and she was laid to rest amid sighs, sobs, tears, whimpers and cries. At this point, flower wreaths and bouquets were placed on her coffin by prominent personalities.
After the burial ceremony all present proceeded to Vice-Chancellor House to join in invocation of collective prayer and funeral meal. A joint condolence meeting will be organized on Monday 6th June at 8:30 am at Shaikh Ayaz Auditorium in Arts Faculty Building of the University by Sindh University Teachers, Officers and Employees Associations. Later in the evening, Quran Khuwani will take place at Vice-Chancellor House between Asr and Maghrib prayers, which will be followed by Soyam Ceremony.
The campus atmosphere remained under a heavy gall of grief and gloom during her last rituals and throughout the day, as wave after wave of people who held Dr Taherani close to their heart and in high esteem thronged Vice-Chancellor's House at the Varsity Campus to offer their condolences and par-take pain with the bereaved family.
The prominent among those who were in attendance at her last rituals were Makhdoom Rafique-u-Zaman, Makhdoom Aqeel-u-Zaman, Makhdoom Fakhar Zaman, Syed Wajahat Ali, Advisor for Higher Education to Governor Sindh, Aajiz Dhamrah, Senator, Shabbir Ahmed Khan Bijarani, MNA, Professor Dr Muhammad Siddique Kalhoro, Acting Vice-Chancellor, University of Sindh, Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui, Former Vice-Chancellor, University of Sindh, Dr Asadullah Qazi, Chancellor, Isra University, Dr Mujeeb Sehrai, Vice-Chancellor, SAU Tando Jam, Faizullah Abbasi, Vice-Chancellor, Daud Engineering University, Karachi, Muhammad Aslam Uqeli, Vice Chancellor MUET, Honourable Members of Sindh University Syndicate, Office Bearers of Sindh University Teacher, Officers and Employees Associations, Ghulam Muhammad Bhutto, Registrar, University of Sindh, Ghulam Ali Hassan, Wing Commander, Qasim Rangers, Colonel Shakeel Ahmed, Dr Naimatullah Laghari (FAPUASA), Ghazain Khan Bijarani, Faqeerdad Khoso, MPA, Sohail Shoro, Munir Ahmed Junejo, PVC, LUMHS, Muhammad Saleh Rajar, Former Registrar, University of Sindh, Zulfiqar Yousufani, all Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Deans, Directors, Chairmen, Faculty, Officers and Employees in large numbers.
The attendee opinion taken at random, spoke of Dr Taherani as an excellent person with a sparkling sense of humour, an upright academic with a stern air of integrity, an enviable administrator with a rare set of leadership skills and a fine human being with a heart of gold. Meanwhile, people from diverse cross-sections of society from near and far, home and abroad continued pouring in to offer their condolences to her husband Dr Iftikhar Nasir and brother Dr Aziz Taherani and other members of the family of late Dr Taherani until last updates.
