Commissioner Karachi Division Ejaz Ahmed Khan has said that the Lyari expressway from Merewether Tower to Sohrab Goth would be completed by end December to help ease traffic flow within city. Addressing the members of Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers & Exporters Association at Iftar dinner organized in his honour at PHMA house, he said that the expressway would reduce the rush hour difficulties for the public.
"Lyari Expressway from Tower to Sohrab Goth, shall be completed by end December this year which will ease traffic flow within city by reducing traffic load during rush hours from Tower," he said. He said that he was personally monitoring the removal of encroachments from the route of Lyari Expressway and the work is progressing smoothly under his supervision. He said that exports are the backbone of the country and the value-added textile sector has provided jobs to millions of people.
"We acknowledge their contribution towards national economy and are ready to help them at anytime," he said, adding that "their problems and issues which fall within jurisdiction of Commissioner House will be resolved on priority basis". Earlier, Chairman of Pakistan Apparel Forum Jawed Bilwani in his welcome address highlighted role of Karachi in the national economy and briefed the Commissioner about issues & problems faced by the members of the association.
He in particular, stressed the need of construction of southern Bypass on priority basis and removal of encroachments from the 1.75 kilometer route of Lyari Expressway due to which, the project was not functional completely. He added that master plan for northern Bypass and southern Bypass was made 31 years ago but the southern bypass project was never initiated.
Zubair Motiwala said that both the bypasses are equally important for the smooth flow of traffic within the metropolis and after construction of southern Bypass, the traffic pressure on the roads of Karachi will be eased by almost 35 percent. Junaid Makda, President SITE Association, stressed the need of revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) which was greatly facilitating the labourers of SITE area and its revival was pivotal to address traffic issues of Karachi. DC Malir Muhammad Ali Shah, Chairman SITE Limited Ahmed Nawaz Jagirani, Secretary SITE Limited Agha Fakhar Hussain, Saleem Parekh, Abdul Rasheed Fodderwala, Rafiq Godil, Khawaja Usman, Arshad Aziz and other members were also present.
