Military courts punishment: Supreme Court larger bench to resume hearing of appeals

A five-member larger bench of Supreme Court on Monday (today) will resume the hearing on eight appeals filed against Peshawar High Court (PHC) verdict which upheld military courts punishments, awarded to 17 militants, or allied group members involved in killing innocent people and targeting security installations to sabotage peace in the country.
It may be recalled that after constituting a larger bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh, Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik and Justice Faisal Arab, the top court had clubbed 17 appeals against the PHC verdict that endorsed military courts punishments including death sentences to the appellants.
Reserving verdict in eight appeals, the bench dismissed an appeal filed against seven years imprisonment in the matter whereas the bench has issued directives to the Attorney General office to submit trial record about the rest of eight accused persons before the court by June 20.
