This is apropos a Business Recorder news item "Assets abroad: Dar say will step down if allegations are true" carried by the newspaper on Sunday. According to it, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has said that he will step down if anybody proves his assets abroad. He was responding to Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rashid Ahmed's allegations on the floor of the National Assembly who accused him of having assets abroad.
"I have tolerated the wrong statements being made by others against me for a long time and from now I will take all those to the court who would give wrong statement or for any loose talk against me," according to Dar.
Regardless of Dar's defence, it is an established fact that Sheikh Rashid is in a state of despair, typically one which results in rash or extreme behaviour. Desperation is a hopeless state; and he seems to be in this state since the 2008 general elections. One must not lose sight of the fact that he served the country as information minister and later as railways minister during General Musharraf's rule. Although a strong opposition voice, Sheikh Sahib appears to be in an inactive and dormant period. Dar, too, is likely to slip into a dormant period anytime soon.
