The city witnessed major power breakdown on Tuesday night after it received first spell of monsoon season. Of the total 1400 KE's feeders, some 200 tripped, causing hours-long power shutdown in major part of the city. The rainfall and consequent feeders' tripping again exposed the KE's poor power transmission infrastructure as usual.
The areas that faced power suspension include Shahrah-e-Faisal, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Nursery, PECHS, Korangi Industrial Area (KIA), New Karachi, Clifton, Landhi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Lyari, Federal B. Area, Garden East and West, Liaquatabad and others.
On last January 29, the city faced similar blackout following tripping occurred in Extra High Tension (EHT) line in Jamshoro. But that tripping happened due to intense fog. The citizens, who were all set to go for Eid shopping after Ifrar, had to stay at homes due to the unfavourable situation on roads and markets after the rainfall.
"KE technical team has restored some 40 percent feeders within an hour after they tripped. Restoration work is underway on the remaining feeders," a KE spokesman told Business Recorder. When it started raining, KE had deliberately suspended power to some areas in order to avoid any major breakdown, but as soon as the rain stopped, the power was restored, he said.
