Markets on Saturday remained closed in the metropolis, as traders mourned the death of renowned social worker - Abdul Sattar Edhi. Traders paid homage to late Abdul Sattar Edhi by keeping markets closed across the city on the first day of business after the three-day Eid holidays, while a sizable number of traders also attended his namaz-e-janaza that was held at the National Stadium.
Due to the market closure on Saturday, all trade and commercial activities including supply of medicines, grain and other essential commodities came to a standstill. All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Chairman, Muhammad Atiq Mir told Business Recorder, "Traders had announced to observe a day of mourning to pay homage to the great Edhi sahib, who served humanity all his life. Traders kept their businesses closed to offer tribute to Edhi sahib," "Traders will now resume their activities from next Monday after having been shut for Eid holidays," Mir said.
Lauding the great humanitarian services of the late Abdul Sattar Edhi for the nation, Karachi Tajir Ittehad Chairman, Muhammad Atiq Mir said, that "Edhi served every needy and suffering person sincerely". He said, the late Edhi was the most recognised face in Pakistan, and he has raised the country's image high all over the world, as a humanist.
Mir, described Edhi as a 'most significant' person of the nation. "He lived a simple and saint like life - but he was laid to rest like a king. He passionately helped millions of poor and destitute people with free medical and relief services at their doorsteps across the country," Atiq Mir said.
"Edhi was a great person whose life has been a torch of humanism," President All Pakistan Organization of Small Traders and Cottage Industry, Mehmood Hamid told Business Recorder, saying that commerce activities were ceased to pay homage to late Edhi in the city. "Several other charity organisations followed him to serve the humanity since he was sincere to his work," he said.
"He was such a great person whose services to humanity have been invaluable. Traders pay tribute to him by keeping their markets closed for today," Chairman Sindh Tajir Ittehad, Jamil Paracha also told Business Recorder, that "markets may also remain closed on Monday to mourn Edhi death on three consecutive days".
