A sugar mill has been told by the city's top court to sell its stock and then deposit the money with it to pay farmers who provided the mill with sugarcane.
The Lahore High Court's ruling against the Brothers Sugar Mills came on Tuesday as Chief Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah set August 15 to hear the parties involved and have the mills' assets cleared up to pay the farmers. And since no one appeared to represent the mills, he told its board of directors to do so for the next hearing.
The order comes following complaints by farmers who have appealed to the court though the chief justice had on June 24 ordered the mills' seal-off because it owed the aggrieved farmers up to Rs 870 million.
Tuesday's hearing also saw the cane commissioner telling the court that the mills had already been sealed off and that its stock of 400,000 sugar bags confiscated. He also claimed the mills had promised several banks the rest of the 265,000 bags.
