The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has informed the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs that the Commission would launch a campaign for revision of voter lists from August 1, 2016.
The committee met with Mian Abdul Manan in the chair at Parliament House on Tuesday and discussed various bills relating to the ECP and procedure for holding local as well as general elections. The committee also discussed the salaries of Members of the Parliament as announced by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the budget speech. The committee also discussed the security matters of the Parliamentarians.
The committee recommended the government to put in place a comprehensive legislation as early as possible to strengthen and make independent Election Commission of Pakistan and for holding free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
Additional Secretary of the ECP briefed the committee members about the steps taken for holding free, fair and transparent election in the country. He said that the ECP would launch a campaign for revision of voter lists on August 1, 2016.
After discussing the amendments to the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2014 moved by Dr Shireen Mazari and Munaza Hassan, the committee referred them to the Electoral Reforms Committee, which is already preparing a comprehensive draft regarding legislation for ECP and elections. While considering the security matters of Parliamentarians, the committee recommended that CCTV Cameras should be installed in the Parliament Lodges.
The next meeting of the committee would be held on July 19, 2016. The ECP would give comprehensive briefing to the committee about its requirements for holding free, fair and transpar.
