Pakistan is surrounded by myriad internal and external threats that demand determined national effort to face and diffuse them! One such threat that underpins all and assumes existential dimension is the unholy nexus between power and corruption. As Pakistan gained independence in 1947, the political power was concentrated in the feudal hands. They held sway over the masses through power and privileges enjoyed by the landed aristocracy. For whatever their weaknesses, the feudal leaders were essentially nationalistic, patriotic and less prone to financial corruption following the legacy of the British rulers.
The power changed hands between feudalistic elite and bureaucracy and the country experienced quick industrialisation through the decades of 1950s and part of 1969s giving rise to another moneyed class of industrialists. This was part of the global wave of industrialisation creating a wave of wealth. The process of industrialisation and accumulation of wealth in the neo-rich class was interrupted by nationalisation and later by rudderless governance as a consequence of the derailment of democratic setups.
The political creed that emerged through either the nurturing by the military governments to fill the political void or the legacies of the feudal elements faced difficult challenges in the electoral process as the elections started becoming exceedingly costly through incipient corruption. Politics became a "game of money, for the money and by the moneyed" and the stakes kept going higher and higher going much beyond the capacity of genuinely accredited individuals who considered politics a public service.
It has now assumed alarming proportions. Politics has become dynastic as a result of amassing of dirty wealth in the hands of the few who took turns in power. They have stashed their billions in safe havens to buy their way into next round of power and while back in power to fill up their coffers by tens of billions for the future turns. The nexus is becoming stronger and stronger and the political loyalties are getting limited to houses of filthy money. Nothing good can come out of this political quagmire and the government in time or in waiting has neither the gumption not the capacity to handle myriad internal and external threats facing the country.
The state of affairs cry out for remedies. When it comes to the call for remedies, one thing may be clear as the first thing first: the breaking of the power-corruption nexus. It is to get rid of the diagnostic houses that have one way or the other used their stints of power to make more money for staying in power. If the dynastic chain is not broken, more power will breed more money and it would become well nigh impossible to control the corrupt and powerful mafia.
The valiant forces have taken precious sacrifices in the war against the terrorism. They have succeeded in stemming the tide but to stabilise the gains there is a need for reconstructive phase to win back the hearts and minds and undertake socio-economic development in the impoverished areas which become fertile grounds for enticement by the terrorist organisations. Whereas we are achieving outstanding victories, albeit at a great cost, we are badly losing in the enduring phase because of the corrupt practices permeating through the hierarchies of the corrupt dynastic houses. Going after the corrupt to break the nexus has become a matter of survival for Pakistan. The people of Pakistan need to join in collective strength and pursue the focused agenda of rooting out this vicious nexus and carving out a safe future for the country!"
