The joint opposition will meet today (Monday) to discuss a possible 'joint strategy' amid continued deadlock with the government over finalisation of the proposed terms of references (ToRs) to investigate Panama Leaks. The meeting would also discuss the possible names, the opposition will be sharing with the government for appointment as members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The decision of the joint opposition meeting was taken during a meeting of the opposition leaders on July 11, attended by leader of the opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah, opposition leader in Senate Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
The opposition leaders have decided that a 'joint strategy' would be chalk out in case no breakthrough was possible with the government on formulation of the ToRs for a proposed inquiry commission to investigate the allegations levelled in Panama papers, also involving Prime Minister's children.
The meeting would take place following Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif instructed the government team to reach out to the opposition parties to remove the deadlock which was followed by a meeting of the opposition parties on Monday last at the chamber of the opposition leader in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmad Shah.
According to the sources, invitations have been extended to all opposition political parties including Muttahdia Qaumi Movement (MQM), Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamaat-e-Islami to attend the meeting, besides PPP and PTI.
They said that the opposition parties would also discuss the ongoing consultation process of the opposition leader in National Assembly with Prime Minister through Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on the names of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
They said that Khursheed Shah will take the opposition parties into confidence on the ongoing consultation process on the possible ECP members.
On Sunday, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar met opposition leader Syed Khursheed Shah at the later residence to deliberate on the names of the ECP members.
According to a statement issued following the meeting, the two leaders agreed that the leader of the opposition and the government will soon succeeded in giving a final shape to the list containing names of the ECP member. It was also agreed that the process of appointment of the ECP members will be completed prior to the expiry of constitutional limit of 45 days, which ends on July 25.
It was further agreed that appointment of the ECP members will be made completely on merit, impartial manner and as per the aspirations of the nation so that to ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.
The duo also agreed to meet again on July 19 (Tuesday) for further deliberation on finalisation of the ECP members. Earlier, the two leaders held meeting on 12 July.
