The ruling United Business Group (UBG) of FPCCI has called upon the government to review taxes on the internet to promote its usage as it is linked to the national development.
It reminded that despite 3G and 4G auctions the mobile internet services could not be improved due to high telecom taxes which is discouraging users and barring growth.
Secretary General UBG Zubair Tufail, in a statement said that the number of internet users in the world has surpassed 3.10 billion while another one billion mobile internet would be added to it within few years, he said. 192 countries are providing 3G services catering for half of the global population while 102 countries have 4G networks while a study suggests that 71 percent of the world's population would be using mobile internet by 2019.
Zubair Tufail said that the available material, programs, websites and other services of the internet are multiplied every day, revolutionising the technology. So far, over eleven hundred thousand applications have been developed by manufacturers of different operating systems and usage of apps has exceeded browsing on PCs in many countries making world a global village. The most important aspect of the internet evolution however, is that its exponential growth allows it to ease and transform people's life and increase their knowledge.
He said internet revolution came to Pakistan after privatization of PTCL which introduced high speed internet, new technologies and products. The incumbent government introduced 3G and 4G technologies in Pakistan which helped masses and business community besides generating revenue of over two billion dollars, Tufail pointed out.
