A polio campaign in Punjab's nine districts is successfully underway and will continue till Thursday, Health Advisor Khawaja Salman Rafique said on Tuesday. The nine selected districts are Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh (except Kot Addu), Layyah (Tehsil Layyah), Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan (Tehsil Sadiqabad), Bhakkar (except Tehsil Mankera), Mianwali, Rawalpindi (high risk union councils) and Multan (urban Rural and Jalalpir Pirwala).
He said that the campaign is being organised as case response to positive environmental sample in Dera Ghazi Khan and a polio case in the Punjab's adjoining district, Dera Ismail Khan, recently. "The areas, deemed to be at a greater risk to polio virus transmission, have been selected," he said. Ali Jan Khan, Secretary of the Primary and Secondary Healthcare, claimed the campaign was targeting 3,049,713 children under five in 411 union councils of these nine districts. "Polio has been declared a national emergency and at the district level, respective district coordination officers have been completely engaged in the polio eradication efforts," he added.
