There are so many different types of brush out there, you can get grey hair just thinking about which is the right one for you and your hair. "The longer your hair, the more important it is to choose the right brush," explains top hairdresser Antonio Weinitschke.
"A wrong or a poorly made brush can damage the structure of the hair," warns fellow stylist Hella Bittman. But what type of brush is best, and for whom?
PADDLE BRUSHES: Women with long, thick, straight hair should use a paddle brush, advises Jens Dagne. The bristles are usually made from plastic, attached to a flat rubber cushion.
"Paddle brushes are practical because they have a broad flat base," says Dagne. Paddle brushes are also great for simpler styles: "You can generate volume by gently lifting the edge of the brush at the base.
Wavy hair can be straightened by using a paddle brush with a hair dryer."
BARREL BRUSHES: A conventional barrel brush is suitable for both men and women with short hair, says Dagne: "Their unique shape allows the air from the hair dryer to get to the hair itself. It gives layered hair a certain lightness."
ROUND BRUSHES: Round brushes are ideal for creating a blowout with lots of waves.
"If you have medium-length hair and want full curls, you should choose a round brush with a diameter of 33 millimetres. 80 millimetres is good for creating curls that are less tight," explains Dagne of the Intercoiffure hairdressers' group.
Thicker brushes with a diameter of around 110 millimetres are more suitable for creating waves if you have long hair. 12-millimetre brushes are suitable for shorter hair and for creating curls with volume.
DETANGLING HAIRBRUSHES: Detangling brushes are recommended for women with long, thin hair, says Bittman: "The bristles are made of soft, flexible plastic and glide through the hair, even if it is wet."
NATURAL BRISTLE BRUSHES: If you have very fine, dull or sensitive hair, you should invest in a brush with natural bristles, advises Dagne.
"Natural hair brushes have exactly the right softness and strength needed for short and sparse or long and fine hair." However, "a natural bristle brush with a base and handle made from ebony" can be rather pricey.
Whichever brush you choose "the bristles should never have sharp edges, otherwise they will tear the structure of the hair," warns weinitschke from the German Hairdressing National Federation.
Hair brushes should always be used as intended.
"Never use a brush like a rake, in a top to bottom motion. Always unravel the small knots bit by bit from the ends to the roots, otherwise the ends will split," says Bittman at the Association of German Hairdressers.
You can never brush too often, adds Weinitschke.
"You might not have to brush your hair 'one hundred strokes' per day, but if you do have long hair you should comb it often."
