Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday strongly reacted to federal government decision to make amendments in Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), saying it will be an infringement upon the rights of provinces. PTI central information secretary Naeemul Haq said that any unilateral decision by the federal government to make amendments in CrPC and framing law of their own free will be resisted, as this is not acceptable.
He accused ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government that the sole purpose behind making changes in CrPC is to give protection to the killers of the Model Town Tragedy, which haunts the government. "This is nothing but dishonesty as it's meant to save the skin of those involved in killing of innocent people at Model Town by the goons of Punjab Police....and such amendments should not be taken unilaterally," he added.
However, he said that if the federal government is still serious to bring changes in CrPC, it must take the provincial governments onboard or else any attempt to change the CrPC will not be allowed. In an obvious reference to Model Town massacre, he said that the government is more concerned about the killers, but it has nothing to protect the life and property of those who are dying in terror related incidents across Pakistan.
He said that the only solution to end the crime in the country is to depoliticize the police, for which the government is not ready as it uses the police for their own vested interest wherever it wants. Haq said that Khyber Pakhtunkhawa Police, which has emerged as a model police compared to the police of other provinces, should be followed by the government if it is serious about making the police people friendly and independent.
