Turkey has "no clue" about who was behind the attack on a Kurdish wedding in a city close to the Syrian border that left 54 people dead, the prime minister said on Monday. "We do not have a clue about who the perpetrators behind the attack were. Early information on who did the attack, in what organisation's name, is unfortunately not right," Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told reporters in Ankara.
His comments apparently contradicted those by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who said on Sunday that the bomber was a child aged between 12-14 acting on orders of Islamic State (IS) jihadists. Yildirim dismissed the "rumours" about whether the attack was conducted by a child or an adult and insisted security agencies continued their work to find out who was responsible.
"Those who were behind the attack will be revealed, there is no doubt about this." The attack on Saturday on a crowded street wedding in the south-eastern city of Gaziantep was the deadliest this year. The country has suffered a string of attacks in the last 12 months blamed on Kurdish militants and IS. In June, at least 47 were killed in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbul's Ataturk airport, with authorities pointing the finger at IS.
